Music Marketing Project Blog

Music Marketing Project

For my music marketing project, my group and I researched and planned our ideas at the beginning of the project. This helped to organize our thoughts and keep our project on track. Though the group brainstorming issued a few problems, it overall assisted us once we started recording and creating the project.

Brainstorming and Planning Methods

We started with brief research on the artist and the song we chose. We followed that with deeper more informative research on two main companies that worked with our song's genre, soul music. This included Columbia Records and Atlantic Records, both well-known companies.

After we had completed our necessary research, my group and I gained a larger understanding of our project and genre. We also comprehended what the genre soul music had to offer and how many artists utilize it in a music video. The research was not our only preparation though. Before starting anything, my group and I decided to compile a word document on all our ideas of what the project would be about. We then assembled the document into a small yet detailed summary of our plot and what the story of our music video would be about. Making a summary helped us stay on track and maintain our original message without accidentally straying too far away from the main idea.

We also utilized another method named storyboarding where you make little drawings with a small yet detailed comment under them. These descriptions contained shots, angles, composition, and what the clip had to offer to the storyline. Storyboards are used very often to help the producers of films to imagine how the film will look and show how the video will progress. This also helps decide what specific shots and angles will be used for each scene before filming. Storyboarding also helps with getting a feel for what suits the film better and thinking about how that will contribute to the message of the video.

However, throughout our brainstorming process, my group and I encountered a few issues that needed to be resolved. One example was on deciding what our music video was going to be and what it was going to represent. It took my group and I over an hour to decide what the music video’s message was going to be. Since we had such freedom on this project, we had too many ideas on the table that we had to narrow down to one. What made it more complicated was that we had to also fit the vibe the song gave us. Not only this, but once we had chosen our main topic, we still had some trouble with not agreeing on the specific shots and what we should include.

Once we had sorted everything out, my group and I had to move on to the filming section. We planned to meet up for two days to film, since we would be filming for a couple of hours each day. Planning the days, we would meet also helped us stay organized and block out the hours we needed of those days so we would not make other plans accidentally.

This also helped us decide what to film each day, since our whole team would not be able to meet for both days. This led us to having to communicate better since we would be filming our video on different days with different members of the group each time. Overall, planning, brainstorming, and using methods we learned in class to organize our thoughts and ideas, was extremely helpful and necessary for the beginning and creating of this project.
